Following these next procedures for track driving will help to minimize wheel wear and the possibility of wheel failure.
It is important to understand that track use or engaging in racing will void any warranty on TSW product.
First and foremost, check that the wheel installation hardware is correct for your wheels and make sure they are in good condition. All TSW alloy wheels offered are designed to be hub-centric which means that the load is transferred from the center of the wheel. This greatly improves the distribution of force while track driving. In some scenarios this will require a hub-centric ring. If this is the case, always inspect the condition of the hub-centric rings and make sure they are installed correctly in the wheel. Also make sure that the hub-centric ring is the correct diameter for both the wheel bore and the hub-bore of your vehicle.
With regards to wheel lug nuts and bolts, aftermarket wheels will generally require a non OE style lug nut or bolt. Because of this it is critical to make sure the lug has sufficient thread engagement in relation to the wheel, and vehicles mounting hub. You want to make sure that the lug nut does not bottom out on the vehicle stud. If they do, the wheel will require a longer lug nut. Confirm the length of the lug nuts have sufficient engagement, however you do not want too much. When the lug bolts are too long they can interfere with the parking brake or other components on the inner side of the vehicle hub.
With all the hardware confirmed, it’s time to mount your TSW wheels! When installing on the vehicle, it is recommended to use a star tightening pattern (see diagram), and make sure the proper torque amount is reached for your vehicle.
Now that you have gone through the rigors of the track, it is good to allow the wheels to cool down. Once they have cooled, wash the wheel front and back. Then visually inspect the wheel for any cracks or damage from impact. If any cracks or bends are noticed, remove and replace the wheel to avoid any significant failures in the future.
Checking for excessive wheel run-out is important, although visually this can be harder to notice. When you are mounting new tires, it is good to check the wheel for run-out. Many experienced tire installers now have sophisticated machinery to laser check run-out. If the run-outs are excessive it is recommended to remove and replace the wheel.
Wheels are an important safety feature of your vehicle and performing pre and post track wheel checks can greatly reduce the event of wheel failure. Over time if cracks or damage go un-checked, they will create weak spots. These weak spots end up getting exacerbated by more heat and the g forces of track driving which can lead to complete wheel failure.
Being proactive about inspecting your TSW wheels will help to prolong their life, and will keep you shaving seconds on the track.
